To Task

Willows arrive on time for the annual meeting

saddened at how swiftly the summer advanced.

Squirrels scurry in a dither between walnuts

and hickories, and ivy who seem embarrassed

by the whole thing. Usually tardy titmouse

flutter in, taking seats in the back with no word

from field mice who missed the Spring meeting

altogether. Bittersweet tinge a deeper shade

of marmalade at the thought of Northern winds,

who are always such sticklers for brevity and

keeping to task. A quorum is quickly reached,

pumpkins pause in remembrance of fallen friends,

and a consensus is reached on each agenda item

before snow offers her moving benediction.
