Summit

Skies pour copper over punctuated faces,

puddle quickly around unctuous feet,

and swim with stones to unwary foes.

Mountains wrestle doggedly with slippery pines

whose camel clutch always secures the pin,

winning the match sans penalty points.

Lakes sing long melisma in silent recital

with elk. Gnomes surreptitiously return

from Alpine pilfering, their surly rogue

mystically dissolve into tundra, and marmot

waltz through explosions of frozen mire.

My flying here knows no reprimand

above tree-line and oxygen’s constant hand

that tries hard to keep calmly hidden.
