That Sam-I-am! That Sam-I-am!
I do not like that Sam-I-am!
Dr. Seuss
I Am Sam
Equal the night and day into tuxedos
rented to say I do and dresses bought
to reciprocate. Ration amounts of love
and hate into genders that say I won’t
and races that say I can’t. Equal the pay
into accounts of judgement tried by peers
who say You aren’t ― enough.
Enough we weigh like curds squeezed
furtively to clot from sacrificial blood
poured over green eggs and ham
then placed on scales that measure verbs
conjugated differently from I am.
