Mountain Spring
I sing with dogs who have the morning
reflecting in their eyes, their bellies raised
towards heaven. We go outside to pee
and sniff the residue of night from shrubs
and fallen branches. Spring too is rising,
pushing back the quilted fall of leaves
from Winter’s sleep whose...

That Sam-I-am! That Sam-I-am!
I do not like that Sam-I-am!
Dr. Seuss
I Am Sam
Equal the night and day into tuxedos
rented to say I do and dresses bought
to reciprocate. Ration amounts of love
and hate into genders that say I won’t
and races that say I can’t. Equal the pay
into...

River Run
River run wide, shore to shore
conjoined upstream creek to creek
River run high, hurdle to hurdle
lead leg bent slightly, trail leg follows
parallel, pulling through lotus feet
River run tenderly, lover to lover
sweep stroking rapid’s sweet eddy
River run long,...

Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small
it takes time – we haven't time - and to see
takes time, like to have a friend takes time
Georgia O'Keeffe
Jimson
Georgia paints flowers for people
past pistil and stamen, through stigma
and veins flowing petal to leaf, around
stems, all...

Ten States
Sally’s psoriasis finally abates
in time for graduation and Cindy
completes The Book of Mormon,
conversion date to be announced.
I stare at the cottage cheese ceiling
while you whisper in my ear
you no longer love me and a myna bird
cries outside our bedroom...

Smuggler
We stroll into anarchy where cameras are forbidden
and decaying gypsy wagons stretch from impressionist
embankments to glimpse the rampart of Christianshavns.
A hallucinating feeling of time warps through our path
as money changers and whoremongers from the Temple
wink and...

Half Full
Snow has invited himself in,
pulled up a chair, and made
himself at home.
A great listener, he kindly
consoles my impassioned
pleas to be heard.
This will pass he assures.
Solid once, I melt and lift
away unseen
through the river Vaitarna
eternally...

Flowering Fade
It happens so subtly at first,
a slight discoloration or sigh,
a bowing to gravities’ entrance
that before was unnoticed.
The hectic doing-ness of days,
trade’s blurring to and fro,
makes flowering fade faster
than plunging cliff waters.
A tight bouquet of...

Brows
Bright vibrant eyebrows have faded
into hazy apparitions hovering plaintively
above each of my questioning eyes,
their bygone expressions lost in Polaroid
snapshots from the 60s or washed down
the drain with Lifebuoy, Lux or Camay.
Like two arcing Cavendish bananas...

Negotiation
There is a way to place the foot so it glides,
a rolling from heel to toe that lightens,
a way to reciprocate hip and hand that enables
a forward momentum,
a way to stay rooted and yet reach to the light
stretching limbs and bark splitting to blossom
and expand, to...
